Diagnostic Evaluation Of Low Back Pain
![]() |
For those suffering from lower back pain, it is often necessary to undergo some imaging tests in order to pinpoint the problem. Diagnostic evaluation of low back pain can be done in a variety of ways. Conventional X-ray imaging is often the first step towards the diagnosis of a back problem. An X-ray can check for bone fractures and show a picture of the spinal vertebrae. Muscular problems cannot be diagnosed via X-ray. A more in-depth procedure is the CT scan, also known as computerized topography. This procedure is quick and painless and gives a detailed look at the vertebrae.
Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is an even more detailed procedure that can detect various problems in the lumbar area including issues with bones, nerves, tissues, ligaments and vessels. The MRI is a longer procedure that is slightly uncomfortable for some although not painful. Many MRIs take place in an enclosed space and the noise of the machine is loud. However, there is no pain associated with an MRI. Another painless procedure that may be done during the evaluation process is ultrasound imaging. Ultrasound imaging is commonly used during pregnancy to view the unborn baby in the womb.
Once the evaluation is complete and a diagnosis has been made, the right course of action regarding treatment will be determined. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis made. There are so many different causes of back pain. Some of them related to the bones, while others relate to the joints, tissues, muscles or even the nerves. Back pain is one of the most common maladies adults suffer from. Because of this you will find no shortage of treatment methods available. Your doctor will advise you in regards to the best treatment option for your needs.
After diagnostic evaluation of low back pain is completed and you know what the problem is, you are ready to learn what to do about it. Very rarely will surgery be needed. Most of the time, non-surgical means of treatment can be used. Rest, physical therapy, pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections and the application of heat are a few examples of treatment options that may be considered for you. You may end up using several therapies in conjuction with one another, which is often more effective than using only one type of therapy.
