Lower Back And Hip Pain
![]() |
There are various causes of lower back and hip pain, one of which is called bursitis. There is a bony area on the outside of the hip which is covered by a tendon that moves with each step. Between the tendon and the bone is a structure called the bursa which is essentially a fluid-filled sac. This sac can become inflamed and cause a great deal of discomfort. The problem can be treated in a variety of ways. Usually, a combination of exercise and over the counter medications can alleviate the problem.
Occasionally however, it is necessary to have the inflamed bursa removed surgically. This is called a bursectomy and is a minimally invasive procedure that is often done on an outpatient basis. Recovery time is short, a matter of days. Because you don't need your bursa, there are no detrimental side effects that occur after the surgery is done. Although you can live just fine without a bursal sac, an inflamed one can cause you a great deal of pain and discomfort. Once the bursectomy has been performed and recovery has taken place, the pain will cease and you will be able to resume all your normal activities.
Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis may also cause hip pain that is also felt in the lower back. Anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections and exercise can help soothe the discomfort from such a condition. Then there's sciatica, which may originate in the area of the hips and back, and radiate down the back of your leg. Sciatica is characterized by a burning pain which may be accompanied by numbness or weakness down the leg. The best option when dealing with any undiagnosed back pain is to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Your doctor will be able to determine the cause of your lower back and hip pain. Or, they may decide to refer you to a specialist who deals only with the back. From there, a diagnosis will be made and steps will be taken to remedy the problem. Most of the time, back pain issues can be dealt with in a non-surgical manner. Many people find a great deal of relief when they combine medical treatment with home treatment such as over the counter medications, certain types of exercise, the application of heat to the affected area, and even certain types of massage.
